INSIGHTS · NEVER MISSING A DEADLINE

What a missed deadline costs

Most filing penalties are not a single fine. They climb. Here is what each one costs, how fast it climbs and where the dates come from.

Your Accounts Dates

  1. Accounts due at Companies House by 31 December 2026
  2. Corporation Tax return due by 31 March 2027

First accounts after setting up have a different deadline. Companies House will tell you yours.

A Worked Example

A limited company files its accounts two months late. That is £375. Next year it is two months late again, and the penalty doubles to £750. Its Corporation Tax return that year is four months late: £400. Three late filings, £1,525, and none of it is tax.

What Changed Recently

  • From 1 April 2025, VAT late payment penalties went up: 3% (was 2%) at day 15, 3% (was 2%) at day 30, 10% a year (was 4%) after that.
  • From 6 April 2025, HMRC late payment interest became base rate plus 4% (it was plus 2.5%). It was 7.75% from 9 January 2026.
  • From 18 November 2025, directors and people with significant control must verify their identity with Companies House. Companies House won’t accept a confirmation statement until all directors have verified.
  • From 1 February 2026, filing a confirmation statement online costs £50.
  • From 1 April 2026, Corporation Tax fixed penalties doubled.

Three Things to Try

  1. Put every filing date for the next 12 months in one diary, with a reminder a month before each.
  2. Check who files what. Many penalties land because each person thought the other had done it.
  3. If you’re on quarterly VAT, count your points. Four late returns and every late one after costs £200.
